Thinking about how much of my life I’ve wasted looking for parking.... just kidding. I’m actually thinking about how much of my life I’ve wasted suffering from HORRIBLE period symptoms. If you don’t want to read about periods on instagram, keep scrolling. But if you have ovaries and you’re tired of being out of commission for five days out of every month, keep reading.

I’ve had horrible periods for as long as I’ve had a period. Up until a few months ago, I thought symptoms like extreme cramping, fatigue, breakouts etc were just part of the womanhood package, and for five days out of every month I’d just have to buck up and deal with it.

Then I read a book that changed everything I thought about the female body and hormonal system. It’s called “WomanCode” by Alisa Vitti, and it talks about how we can live in sync with our cycle, and be free from horrible period symptoms and the hormonal imbalances that are causing them (because newsflash: they ARE caused by hormonal imbalances that your body is trying to tell you about by giving you the symptom. Cramping is NOT normal, it’s a sign that something else is going on that needs to be addressed, but as women we’ve come to just accept it as a normal part of our cycle).

Anyway. Read the book. I talked way more about it and what I’ve learned in my stories, so watch those too if you want to hear more about my journey. I can’t even say how grateful I am to have found this protocol, and how worth it every single step and lifestyle change has been to get me to where I am now. I just finished my first cramp free period EVER, and I’m seeing many other issues, that I didn’t even realize were hormone related, diminish as well. This is life changing information for women - there is so much more to know about how our bodies work than what we’ve been told, and when armed with the right tools, you can live in tune with your cycle and put hormone issues behind you.

SIMPLE MEAL: paleo tuna salad •1 can wildcaught tuna mixed with @primalkitchen mayo

Between my grandmother passing away, and a few other things happening concurrently, I've taken a big step back from Eat Good Food & Move. Some of it has been to grieve privately, but some of it has been I haven't really been that hungry, and making pretty food just to take a picture of it seemed sort of wrong. 🤔

My entire life, stress = junk food and sadness has = no appetite. And although I've done a better job as of late fueling my body even during times of stress (with the exception of one evening that I found myself sitting at Sonic drive-thru eating tatertots ) most of my meals have been the bare minimum to keep functioning. Not really photo-worthy.
Although I'd consider myself baaaaaaack today (and trying to catch up on comments, emails, and everything else!) I want to change things a little going forward. Simple meals are what have fueled me over the past few weeks. They are what most of my dinners consist of (because I'm too worn out to do something a little fancier by the end of a long day of cooking). They are all that most of my friends and family have time for on a regular basis.
You'll start to see more Simple Meals posts on my feed in the future. Meals that contain a few veggies or fruits (ones you can actually find and buy without several grocery store treks and spending an arm and a leg), and a good balance of protein, carbs, and protein.
Meals that don't require an exorbitant amount of time, but maybe just a little prep and forethought (or maybe not ). Eating the right foods can make our lives better, and I hope I can empower all of you to do just thatThanks for all your patience and love ️

rollin’ into a new week with a big ol bowl of sunshine ️ i somehow forgot to eat two of my meals yesterday in the midst of running around and being away from home for most of the day , i was basically running on water, fumes, and good vibes from @portugaltheman 🤘. i woke up not feelin’ so hot and was craving this sweet potato smoothie bowl - it’s packed with complex carbs, heathy fats, protein, and veggies and i already feel 10x better.
to make:
1/2 C frozen cauli
1/2 C roasted japanese sweet potato
1/2 avocado
1/2 can of @wholefoods full fat coco milk
1/2 C filtered water
2 large carrots
2 tablespoons @bobsredmill golden flax
1 tablespoon hemp seeds
1 tablespoon almond butter
1 serving @alohamoment vanilla protein powder
1/4 teaspoon each cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice
blend in a high speed blender like a @vitamix for 1-2 minutes - you may need to use the tamper or add more liquid cause it’s gon’ be real thicc.
top with frozen blueberries, pumpkin seeds, cacao nibs, and @thecoconutcult !

You guys are all very aware of how much of an advocate I am for turning yourself on throughout the day... aka #dailypleasure. Making a drink for myself everyday is probably one of my favourite ways to do that (with dancing in my car as a close second ). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Because of my skin issues, I decided to lower my caffeine in take. On the days I do consume caffeine I always drink it on a full stomach (keeps the energy highs and lows at bay). I also add collagen and adaptogens in order make them pack a real punch! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
〰️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While I still do love the taste of coffee, I almost as equally love the taste of matcha. It’s time release caffeine so it’s a lot more sustainable for your body to handle (no crash or jitters) and it’s chalk full of antioxidants (1 cup of matcha is like drinking 15 cups of regular green tea with how many antioxidants you’re in taking!). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
〰️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So here’s my go to recipe to make your own creamy, frothy matcha: 
1 tsp @davidstea matcha matsu 
1 tbsp @nutiva coconut manna 
1/2-1 tbsp of maple syrup 
1/2-1 tsp cinnamon 
1.5 cups hot (NOT boiling- it’ll burn the tea!) water ⠀⠀⠀⠀
BLEND ON HIGH
Done.
* ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Optional, but highly recommended: 
1 tbsp @organikahealth enhanced collagen ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1 scoop @vitajingherbs rhodiola. This is like my own natural antidepressant. It lowers cortisol, reduces mental and physical fatigue and brain fog, and improves brain function. I’ve experienced a huge difference since taking this for the last 6 months. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1 scoop @vitajingherbs he shou wu. It makes me feel more calm and balanced, which it is known to do since it is an adaptogen. Just gives me that extra boost of stability both mentally and physically for my day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I'm on day 2 of my #lutealphase and this is probably my FAVORITE out of all of them! This phase is associated with autumn (yearly), the waning moon (monthly), and sunset (daily). SO amazing how a woman's body literally symbolizes nature and it's cyclical patterns  .

During this second half of the cycle, progesterone levels starts gradually rising until they drop off right before menstruation, which calls for plenty of complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and natural sugars. Being a BIG fan of fall produce and roasting my veggies (even when it's 90° outside ) makes this the most delicious + comforting phase of all to me . ️I always do 'porridge' for breakfast. For the luteal phase I batch cooked sprouted #millet and just reheated it with a splash of almond milk + cinnamon, then topped her off with canned pumpkin, raisins, walnuts + sunflower seed butter. So tasty and keeps me full for hours

4 medium carrots, peeled and roughly chopped
2 cans white beans, rinsed+drained
1 lemon, the juice
6 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1/2 tsp coriander powder
1/4 tsp crushed black pepper
good pinch of sea salt

Bring a pot of water with 1 tsp salt to the boil. Add carrots and cook them 10 mins or until tender. Add beans and cook 5 more mins. Drain and rinse with cold water. Put the carrots and beans in the bowl of a food processor and add the other ingredients. Blend until very smooth. Store in the for up to 5 days.

i started doing tabata workouts in the mornings which leave my legs feeling like jello and my tummy growling - lemme tell ya, these golden oats hit the spot .
supporting my follicular phase with oats + pumpkin seeds + healthy fats + nut butter and fighting some pesky inflammation with turmeric - sounds like a solid friday morning to me 🧡
to make:
cook 1/2 cup @bobsredmill gf oats with 1/2 cup filtered water + 1/2 cup @wholefoods full fat coconut milk + 1 tablespoon @bobsredmill golden flax + cinnamon + nutmeg + ginger + turmeric (about 1/4 teaspoon each but you can sprinkle to taste). top with almond butter, a big ol dollop of @thecoconutcult, frozen blueberries, @mountainroseherbs goji berries, pumpkin seeds, and @sunpotion tocos.

 Luteul Phase ( 10 - 14 days ): Still have high energy levels during first week. Do strength/weight  training with some cardio or intense yoga. During the second week just before menstrual phase do pilates, yoga and light jogs.

Mentrual Phase (3-7 days) : 
Energy at its lowest at the beginning so consider them recovery days. The last two days you'll feel slightly more energised to go for walks, yoga and light pilates.

Why is it so hard to talk about our periods? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Because society is based on patriarchal points of view, periods have been categorized as something so taboo. That offends me because periods are glorious. They’re a huge indicator of good health. So no, they’re not the devil, they’re part of life and it’s beautiful to see our bodies at work (I mean, shedding your uterine lining without dying is pretty bad ass 🤷‍️). If your period is horrible, then that’s a neon sign from your body that something needs to be fixed and that’s on you to make a point of finding out what that means for you and your body. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

So with that all in mind, I share all of this with Jonathan. He knows my most common PMS symptoms, he knows when I get my period, he knows which part of my cycle I have the most energy (so he can plan get togethers with friends), and that I want to be left alone during my period (or snuggled when I tell him to hehe). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Ultimately he doesn’t find it weird, because hello! It’s not! He knows that it’s part of being a woman. Sometimes I need to remind him of certain things, but the point is is that bleeds are not taboo in our house and I want to encourage you to open the lines of communication with your partner about this just like you would anything else. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

If you’re a man and you love someone with ovaries, take their hormones seriously instead of using it as a cheap shot like, “oh are you pmsing right now?!” . In reality you’re making fun of her health and who ever said that was okay? Instead, listen to her, support her- every bit of her, even her period and hormones, because caring about her COMPLETE health is a huge part of being a truly present partner. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I’ve never really been a tea person but have been trying to cut coffee for a year or so now now. I cut caffeine out a while back which has been great for my anxiety and endocrine support but still do decaf coffee every so often and have been more and more in the mornings lately. Making the morning coffee is a routine that’s so hard to break. So I’m trying to make some tea. I’ll chill it after it steeps. This is a blend of @yogitea’s Probiotic Balance and Women’s Energy teas, @tazo’s Wild Sweet Orange, and @harneyandsons_se’s Vanilla. I do enjoy matcha but that’s a whole different tea in itself in my opinion. What’s your favorite tea??

i’ve been battling some serious bloat/ibs symptoms ever since i overindulged a bit last weekend (@justins pb cups and @titosvodka…you did me dirty), so i’m taking a smoothie break today to aid with digestion. basically dessert for breakfast, lunch, and dinner  
some things i keep in mind to reset my body after i veer from my typical food routines:
lotssssss of h2o to help flush all the nasties out and keep your hydration levels up (natures best medicine). i sip on room temp water throughout the day to help with digestion.

Dipping back into how I felt about my period as a teenager was kind of terrifying and to share it with you all here - well, that’s another level! I was dropped back into the deep recesses of shame that I felt around my period for, well... most of my life! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Today I believe so strongly in the power of our cycle and so I think it is SO important to share our period stories, the messages we are receiving and how we can reclaim our power, bodies & cycles as women - whether we are menstruating or not! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If we can increase awareness of what we as women need to be most productive, creative and awesome... I think we could get most people on board in supporting us, especially our employers, partners and the men in our life. They can’t help us if we don’t know what we need ️

🥒🥕 RECIPE 🥒🥕
Gluten and dairy free vegetable filled bread! I certainly did break my fast with deliciousness this morning. Flo living and hormone friendly ‘bread’ topped with smashed avo, jalapeño salt, pepper, olive oil, pumpkin seeds and hemp seeds. I toasted the slice under a hot grill pre avo on a baking tray. This is a great recipe to satisfy those bread desires and ensures your not feeling like your missing out . Here’s how to make this scrumptious loaf, depending on budget organic ingredients are ideal: 
You’ll need 1 cup almond mill, 1/2 cup pumpkin seeds, 1/4 cup chopped roasted cashews, 1/2 cup coconut flour, 2tbs psyllium husk, 1 large grated zucchini, 1 large grated carrot, 1 cup grated sweet potato, 4 eggs, 1/4 cup coconut or avo oil, 1tbs paprika, 2 tsp cumin, 2 tsp gluten free baking soda and 2 tsp Himalayan salt. 
To make preheat your oven to 170C. Spray and line a bread tin with baking paper. Combine all the dry ingredients except cashews in a bowl. In a seperate bowl grate your veggies and add lightly whisked eggs and oil. Stir the wet ingredients. Add dry and wet ingredients together in the one bowl and use your hands to make sure it’s well combined. Get down and dirty  Pop the mixture in the tin and sprinkle cashews on top pushing them in gently. Pop in the oven for 60 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. You’ll want to keep an eye on it from 50 minutes as time can vary depending on your oven. It may also need more then 60 minutes. Next remove from the oven and let it cool in the tin for half an hour. Lift the loaf out and slice to enjoy. Keeps for 5 days and I love it toasted under the grill. Hope you enjoy

throughout my whole life this act of constant comparison has been something that’s always stirring up somewhere in my mind - whether it’s in the forefront of my anxiety or just white noise in the background. 
this, coupled with various comments and experiences, conditioned me from a young age to believe i was never good enough, never pretty enough, never skinny enough, blah blah blah - the list goes on. 
if you tell yourself something over and over, eventually you believe it. 
to this day when someone gives me a compliment on my looks i immediately become defensive in my mind - always thinking someone has an ulterior motive or it’s out of pity. 
but it has got to stop. at some point you’ve got to realize that these thoughts are not benefitting you in the slightest. 
it’s a tricky thing to navigate life not comparing yourself to others - i still find myself doing it multiple times a day. 
but it’s important to remember that we are all inherently whole beings from the moment we take our first breath. 
it doesn’t matter if you’ve gained five pounds or have a pesky pimple, these things don’t truly matter in the grand scheme of things. 
all you’ll ever need is already right inside of you  •

Some say that short pastry is one of the hardest thing to prepare but not for me! It is one of my favourit foods to make and I find it super easy. There's a recipe from @nannabede that I love and use whenever I'm craving a quiche but I like to vary what gets in the middle.
I filled this one with chilli mexican mix. On the top I put a sauce made of 3 eggs, 130 g grated cheese, 50 g cream cheese, 3 big tbsp of sour cream 2 tbsp of flour and salt to taste. I used flour to thicken the mixture but you can use (and I would prefer that too) some more cheese. I was simply out of it yesterday evening

I’ve had a hormonal imbalance for a little while now and whatever I’ve tried has never worked until now. Alisa has a super easy 4 day protocol in the book to follow to help cleanse your liver and although it’s kinda shitty at first because of the lack of energy and whatnot I swear after 4 days I saw an improvement in my skin which has been my biggest issue. Nothing and I mean nothing has EVER worked to help me find a solution to my skin problems that are related to my hormonal imbalance until this book came along. I am forever grateful to have found this amazing woman and her book and although my skin is still not perfect it is far better than it has been in months! If you’re dealing with any type of hormonal issue I definitely recommend checking this book out! It is life changing

I really suck at a sleep routine. 
I feel like I much more easily prioritize staying up to work rather than saying, “you can get this done tomorrow, you need to rest.” Why has society romanticized busyness instead of balance? There will always be *more* you could be doing... but really, how important is it? I bet you could do more on 8 hrs of sleep, than what you *think* you can do with 4 hours a sleep and a gallon of coffee.

During fall semester I was nannying, doing my masters and working at David’s Tea. Your girl was feeling SPENT. I would be up and gone from the house at 7:45, be home at 4:15, and out the door again at 5pm so I could work my closing shift. Then once I was back home at 10pm, I was working away at my papers. I woke up feeling “hungover” most days (hello early adrenal fatigue!). I knew something HAD to change. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I made myself a strict bed time every night. I started taking some ashwagandha to help me calm down and help me sleep, I started taking @vitajingherbs rhodiola in my drinks to help with fatigue + mood, and on the days I felt really bad, I didn’t drink any caffeine but loaded up on antioxidants and good fats instead. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

My day to day routine/responsibilities have been a little different since January, which means I have had to re-evaluate my sleep. Once again it was taking a hit (living with someone who works shift work + is a night owl can make keeping a bedtime tough!) It may not be as bad this time, but it’s still something I need to take more seriously. ⠀⠀⠀⠀

So if you’re feeling similarly to me, let’s take this step of prioritizing rest together. Let’s focus on our bed time and really work hard to keep it consistent. I know there will be days where life happens, but I know we can stick to it .

I always crave oatmeal in the morning but have found such joy in the creativity of using different ingredients each week to support my body's hormones  this week I've been making quinoa 'oatmeal' - which is as easy as EVER when you batch cook it for the week. I added some coconut milk, a pinch of coconut sugar + cinnamon (in everything) and topped it off with raspberries, cacao nibs, shredded coconut and a big ol' spoonful of sunflower seed butta .

Starting my new job today and it's a NEW MOON! Gotta be ready for this day

Crispy chickpeas are a new favourite. They are the perfect snack or a great addition to crunch up a salad. Chickpeas provide the body protein and carbohydrates. They are also full of fibre assisting digestion. These gems are also high in zinc and folate, essential for hormone balance. I also love that they help control blood sugar and if your trying to maintain a healthy, predictable flo this is crucial! These crunchies are so easy to make. Set your oven to 180C. Rinse a can of organic cooked chickpeas. Dry dry dry! As much as you can using paper towel or a tea towel, this is a very necessary step! Peel the skins of [makes them EXTRA crunchy]. Dry again. Toss in a bowl with a tablespoon of avocado, coconut or olive oil and a little salt. Roast for 45-60 minutes giving the baking tray a schimmy every 15 minutes. Once they are crisp remove and season as desired. I love paprika and cumin but the options are endless! They last crisp and crunchy for about 4 days ... Assuming you don’t eat em first

Anyway, with all this cleaning, I wanted to share with you the some of the products I’ve been using for my house cleaning! They’re not all completely non toxic, but it’s all a transition + learning process. It’ll take time, but every little thing counts! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

A disrupted endocrine system can often lead to infertility... which you wouldn’t notice until you started to try. So for me? I want to do everything in power to safeguard my body systems... baby or not! Optimal functioning is the goal of course. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This plate is what my breakfast goals are made of! Roasted sweet potatoes (hello luteal phase) with @primalpalate meat&potatoes spice, mashed avocado, eggs with my favorite mixin @cleverfoodies, leftover pineapple and a mandarin orange  from @imperfectproduce that tasted pretty perfect to me! Then loaded with hot sauce and a cup of coffee! Cody helped too

Eating foods to support each phase of my menstrual cycle has become such a deeply intimate experience between mind, body and soul. I'm about halfway through the #ovulatoryphase - so focusing on bright, fresh and vibrant foods and tastes is what I'm aiming for. .

Lunch from today carried over steamed red pepper + asparagus from last night's dinner. I also cooked a handful of fresh shrimp with a chili-lime seasoning, coconut oil and fresh cilantro. For the salad, I marinated a bed of spring mix (expiration date was for almost two weeks ago! It definitely wasn't bad - follow your intution when it comes to food waste) with coconut aminos, toasted sesame oil, (salvaged) green onions, more cilantro, and lemon juice. You can't beat it

I'm about halfway through the #ovulatoryphase - so focusing on bright, fresh and vibrant foods and tastes is what I'm aiming for. . On Tuesday, May 15th, 2018 we will have the next New Moon, this time in Taurus.

The Aries New Moon last month invited us to go within, to discover what really serves us, and to choose radical self-care. 
How did this manifest in your life the past month? Did you make changes that were more aligned with your Truth?

The Sun has been in Taurus since April 21st and will stay there for another week. Taurus is the practical, Earthy sign of growth and materializing spirit into matter. You might have seen your intentions come to life in a very grounded, practical way. 
When we look at nature, we can see how fast everything grows. The energy of the Sun takes form. inspired by @lonijane , this stuff is so convenient for a quick + easy breakfast (and so aesthetically pleasing am i right…).
just soak 1/2 C of the mixture in 1/2 C non-dairy milk + a dollop of some probiotic yogurt (@thecoconutcult is my fave) overnight and top with fresh fruit in the morning!
soaking the nuts + seeds overnight begins the germination process which helps break down the phytic acid they’re coated in + enzyme inhibitors which can be hard for the body to break down. this increases the body’s ability to absorb and digest the nutrients more easily and increases their nutritional value.
no more bloating or indigestion - your gut will thank you 🤘
in my jar:
1/2 C hemp seeds
1/2 C cacao nibs
1/2 C coco shreds
1/2 C pumpkin seeds
1/2 C oats (follicular phase wassup )
1/2 C sunflower seeds
1/4 C golden flax
1/4 C sesame seeds
1/2 C chia seeds
you can also add some dried fruit in there, but i opted out this go around.
make this recipe waste free by getting all the ingredients from the bulk food section! mama nature will thank you for that one

SPROUTED QUINOA. Homemade $1 quinoa from the bulk section that will last me the duration of my ovulatory phase vs. $7 store bought sprouted quinoa. .

After soaking it for a few hours, it took about a day of sprouting until I was able to cook and consume this quinoa. Not everyone has the luxury being able to purchase expensive convenience heath foods; but TIME is also a privilege. Not everyone can afford to make the time to focus on the preparation of their food, let alone for the sole reasons of making it's nutrients more bioavailable - that's almost laughable! Most people don't even live near a bulk food store (I had to drive an hour to get to mine), so every sequential aspect of this food included PRIVILIDGE + ACCESS. .

I feel extremely grateful for this lifestyle, and make sure to thank God everyday for being born into it; but starting in your own community is the best way to make a difference. Time to brainstorm ways to provide mine with access to resources + education so that they can also not only survive, but THRIVE. Small scale organic farming anybody? I need ideas. It really does take a village.
